Are there male labor and delivery nurses
Jul 7, I don't know if it is that they don't usually apply for that area, or that the management doesn't usually hire them. I am not sure how I would have felt then with a male nurse, I think for the most part it would have been fine, but everyone is different.
It is a notion that persists today it seems I personally never thought that I would have a chance to work in this area because I was a man. To my surprise the hiring manager was excited to see a male nurse apply and said she was looking to hire more males to add some diversity to the floor. And I must say that I am concerned how other nurses who don't share the directors vision will treat me. I feel a pressure to perform better than any other nurse and be more knowledgeable just because I am a man which is a good thing.
Anyways I just wanted to add my two cents and feelings. I start in a few weeks and I am nervous, so wish me luck.. Specializes in Obstetrics. Jul 31, Best of luck to you! I loved it in school, and I loved it when my wife gave birth. I was wondering if anyone knew any male LD nurses. I posted a similar question not long ago, but I got only one reply from a man, and he said he could not get a LD job.
I got some positive and some not-so-positive replies from women. I would love any input! Jun 10, I think you should try for it. I think there was a male cna or student or something during my post partum period with one of my children. Sorry I'm so vague I was pretty out of it exhasuted, but I didn't mind at all. Especially with you living in the bay area, it's pretty open minded. You should have a decent chance. I don't believe you being male should have any bearing on your ability to do your job.
Unfortunaly it might. Specializes in Critical Care. Has 15 years experience. But if those kinds of things stop you, then you wouldn't have gone into nursing to start with male nurse here so I know. Just keep in mind that there'll be those people who think you are doing it for kinky reasons. The rest of us know full well the distinction between the thrill of seeing a girlfriend in the buff and some patient in the buff is a gulf greater than the Grand Canyon, but some people tend to be opinionated absent fact.
And you might get some discrimination for management types that don't think it's appropriate and that might affect career potential even if it's ok at your hospital, when you try to move, it might not be ok at others and it might decrease your employment opportunities.
But like I said, I'm not being negative, just saying that if you go into it eyes wide open, then you won't be surprised at what you find.
Good luck - that's the wonderful thing about nursing, there are tons of opportunities -- and your sex shouldn't figure into the equation. Even if it does from time to time, you are on the high ground for demanding that it shouldn't. Seriously, though Since nurses do so much more labor support than docs do, it's a factor to consider. I'm not so sure. Not that they couldn't be wonderful teachers. However, RNs may rotate between the different related units. Nurses may have a circulating or scrub role during cesarean deliveries.
Labor and delivery is distinct from NICU as, in the latter case, the focus is on infants with serious needs. L and D nurses work under ob-gyns. The nurse, though, is often the health professional that the mother sees the most of. Of course one sees more of the doctor when things are not normal and routine. Labor and delivery nurses see plenty of blood and body fluids and a lot of pain. They also see a lot of happy endings.
Professionals caution, though, that not everything ends this way; there are still births along the way. There can be other unexpected life changing news. Labor and delivery nurses start out their careers the way other nurses do: by completing nursing school and passing a licensing examination.
The licensing examination is general. Nursing students gain some experience with a wide range of populations. Some professionals recommend that prospective labor and delivery nurses do a senior practicum in that setting.
