In rehearsal, Evan Peters was finding the line a bit awkward and forced for his character, leading Kate Winslet to ask if she could instead say the line. Similarly, Mare was the one who found the Winstons cigarettes in the original script. By his request, it was switched to Zabel. The COVID restrictions placed upon filming forced the production to get creative in limiting extras and shooting locations.

Girard College was used for multiple scenes, including a restaurant and courtroom scene. In addition, only a select number of extras were used, and were often in different clothes across the same scene to create the illusion of a crowd. Wayne Potts' house is an actual house that is attached to a bar.

Whilst filming was done on location, the attic was built on a soundstage and filmed there for safety reasons. All of the scenes at the Carroll's house were filmed in the first week of production. Drew's move of shuffling backwards was a move that Izzy King would do for fun in-between scenes. Craig Zobel loved it so much that he wrote it into a scene.

Creator Brad Ingelsby grew up in a sports family- his dad and brother played basketball. This inspired Mare's background as a former basketball player in her youth. In the scene where Moira is bullied at school, Craig Zobel made the lunchroom completely quiet for Kassie Mundhenk to be comfortable filming. The latter two scored their very first Emmy nominations. Winslet, Nicholson and Peters were awarded Emmys for their performances.

Evan Peters decided to make Zabel more drunk at the bar than what was originally scripted, to convey to the audience the burden that he's been carrying and to make him a more sympathetic character. The character was already written before Zobel came on board to direct. Cameron Mann was considered for the role of Ryan based upon his resemblance to Julianne Nicholson.

They play love interests in both. This marks the first time Kate Winslet has had to use a gun for a role. They have two daughters.
