Why lacquer paint
Hire a team of professionals, and it will be money well spent. A GOOD lacquer job should look like glass. BAD will show brushstrokes, or worse, roller marks — that orange-peel effect we work so hard to avoid.
As a side note, you can cheat. Phillip Jeffries makes lacquer wallcovering. They discontinued the lipstick red, tragically, but the navy and bronze are pretty great. Quoted most recently in The Washington Post and on Washingtonian. Which is not bossy. It is also less toxic, so it can be used right in your garage with less concern about ventilation. The main drawbacks to lacquer as a DIY auto paint is the fact that you need to spray it on instead of using a paintbrush and paint can.
To some, this might seem easier, and it can be. However, others actually find it more difficult to use. You not only need to use professional-level spray painting equipment to get it done efficiently but you need to be extra careful that you have covered areas of the car you don't want painted. Spraying gives you a little less control over where the paint ends up, as opposed to cutting in with a paintbrush. Sure, but honestly, I recommend using colored lacquer rather than traditional paint, for all the reasons stated above.
Oil-based paint used to be the standard for painting cabinets, but it takes too long to dry, off-gasses in your home for what feels like forever, and worst of all light colors will turn yellow over time.

And nothing feels quite like the silky-smoothness of lacquer! Lacquer is hard and durable, and has traditionally been used as a topcoat. If your cabinets were factory-finished, they were probably done with lacquer.
